Finlands Journalistförbund ber Finlands regering idka påtryckning mot Belarus för att landet ska befria fängslade journalister och lägga ner åtalen mot journalister som gripits.

Journalistförbundet är också oroligt för det som sker i Belatrus: trakasserier, förföljelse, misshandel och tortyr.

Journalistförbundet har i dag, 25 mars, skickat en vädjan till statsminister Sanna Marin och utrikesminister Pekka Haavisto tillsammans med 50 europeiska journalistorganisationer. Finlands vädjan är undertecknad av ordförande Hanne Aho.

Vädjan lyder så här:

“I dag, 25 mars, firas frihetsdagen i Belarus. Det är dagen då landets opposition årligen samlas för att fira grundandet av Vitryska folkrepubliken 1918. I dag har landet över 250 politiska fångar, av vilka 12 är journalister. Efter det triggade presidentvalet 9 augusti 2020 har över 30 000 människor gripits, av vilka 480 journalister. Många av dessa har torterats och misshandlats. Åtal har väckts mot över tusen personer.

Ledarna för de europeiska journalistorganisationerna vädjar till regeringarna i Europa att de omedelbart ska kräva av regeringen i Belarus att de 12 gripna journalisterna frias och att åtalen ska läggas ner i de rättsprocesser som inletts mot journalister.

Journalistförbundens ledare ber att regeringarna samarbetar aktivt inom FN, OSSE (Organisationen för säkerhet och samarbete), Europarådet och EU. Journalistförbunden ber att det internationella samfundet ökar pressen på Belarus och skrider till åtgärder mot kränkningarna av pressfriheten och de mänskliga rättigheterna i Belarus.
