The money will be used to buy protective equipment, internet connections and generators for journalists working in the region. The UJF Board approved the donation on Thursday 3 October. This is the third time that the UJF has donated financial aid to Ukrainian journalists. The equipment will help Ukrainian journalists to work safely in regional centres. The UJF has remained in contact with the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU). Its President, Sergiy Tomilenko, has passed on information about journalists working in the midst of war and their situation. “Journalists in Ukraine must be able to carry out their vital work so that the world knows what is happening there,” says Salla Nazarenko, the UJF’s international affairs expert. The UJF has assisted Ukrainian journalists before. Last year, the union also donated €5,000 to support and protect journalists in Ukraine. When the war broke out in 2022, the UJF donated €15,000 through the Ukraine Safety Fund established by the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
