UJF makes donation to improve safety of Gaza journalists

Union contributes €5,000 toward ensuring safe working spaces for journalists in Gaza.

The UJF has decided to donate €5,000 to help ensure the safety of journalists in Gaza. The decision was made by the union's Board on 5 June.

In May, the UJF received an appeal from its members, urging the union to take a stance on the situation in Gaza and to donate money to assist journalists.

The donation will go towards running solidarity centres established by Palestinian journalists, where journalists can work safely. The centres, which have electricity and internet access, serve as working spaces for journalists in Gaza, where all newsrooms have been destroyed by Israeli bombings.

“Palestinian journalists continue to work even though all editorial offices have been destroyed. With this support, we can assist them in their incredibly persistent and heroic efforts,” says Salla Nazarenko, the UJF’s international affairs specialist.

The union has made repeated appeals on behalf of journalists working in Gaza, most recently on 23 May.

Previously, the union has provided support for journalists abroad, including for Ukrainian journalists, as well as for journalists in Turkey to enable them to continue working during protests.

The union’s income has declined in recent years for several reasons. Jobs in the media sector have decreased, and income from membership fees has fallen. The union covers its operating costs with investment returns, but the situation is also more uncertain than before. At the same time, overall costs have risen.
