The UJF is making an additional donation of 5000 euros to journalists and media in Ukraine. The union’s board has decided to make the donation on the first anniversary of the war, which was launched by Russia on 24 February last year. The funding will be channelled through the Ukraine Safety Fund.

In March 2022, the union donated 15 000 euros to the same fund.

The funds will be used to support and protect journalists in Ukraine. Journalists in at risk will be assisted so as to be able to work in a crisis situation and will be provided with emergency humanitarian aid, safety equipment and first aid supplies.

“The UJF calls for the protection of journalists’ work in this crisis area. Several media professionals have been killed or wounded in Ukraine. The European Federation of Journalists is aware that 12 journalists were killed in Ukraine last year. It has become the most dangerous country in the world for media workers,” said Salla Nazarenko, UJF International Affairs Specialist.

According to the UN, more than 7,000 civilians have been killed and nearly 12,000 injured in the war.

Anyone can donate to the Ukraine Safety Fund, which was set up by international journalists’ organisations. Donors do not need to be members of the UJF. For further details  on how to donate to the fund, see here.
