The UJF is an independent trade union that negotiates collective bargaining agreements. It works to further the financial, social and professional standing of its members, both salaried and freelancers.

Finnish professionals continue to have an opportunity for networking at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. The scholarship program for Finnish scholars, launched with the support of Finnish foundations at the Wilson Center in 2013, has been extended with further funding for years 2017–2019 from The Ella and Georg Ehrnrooth Foundation, Helsingin Sanomat Foundation, Saara and Björn Wahlroos Foundation and the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation.
