Union highlights importance of protecting sources and whistleblowers in statement to justice ministry. The UJF has submitted its opinion to the Ministry of Justice in response to the report of a ministerial working group on the review of the constitutional rules on the protection of confidential communications. The ministry had requested that the union offer its opinion on the matter. The union considers it essential that the constitutional amendment take into account the protection of sources. The union also stressed that the penalties for the abuse of intelligence operations must be severe, and that intelligence documents generated by such operations must be subject to freedom of information. The UJF stated in its submission to the ministry that the working group’s report paid scant attention to the importance of source protection. It points out that source protection is guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights, and that interference in human rights can only take place if imperative in a democratic society. The union stressed that protecting sources ensures that failings in society come to public attention vial the media. It also assists the authorities with addressing them. It also drew attention to the need for protecting whistleblowers
