UJF president steps down

The president of the Union of Journalists in Finland (UJF), Hanne Aho, is stepping down from her post. Aho's term will end on 10 January following a mutual agreement between her and the union.

The UJF board has announced plans to reform the organisation and its management practices.

“There have been disputes about leadership and communication in the union office. These issues could not be resolved within the current organisational structure, so reform is now necessary,” says Aho.

“I have been union president for ten years. I had already decided that this would be my last term. I would now like to step aside so that these reforms can take place smoothly.”

Antti Laakso, the chair of the Union Council, will serve as interim president of the UJF.

“It is important that we develop our operations and leadership to ensure improved functionality moving forward. This reform is an integral part of this development process,” says Laakso.

“Hanne Aho has had a long career as UJF president. During this time, she has worked tirelessly for the interests of our members, helping to negotiate dozens of collective agreements, and defending journalism and journalists. We owe her our deepest gratitude for this. The union will continue to build on this foundation.”

Aho took over as UJF president in January 2015 and has served three terms.

In line with the union's rules, the Council will elect a new president to complete the remaining two years of the current term of office. An extraordinary meeting of the Council will be convened in Helsinki to elect the new president, although the exact date has not yet been set.

The union's operations, member services, and advocacy work, including collective bargaining negotiations, will continue as usual.

“This spring, the UJF will conduct collective bargaining negotiations in eight media sectors. At the same time, several media companies, including the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle), are negotiating changes. Our focus remains on advocating for our members’ interests in these negotiations,” says Laakso.
